German tech-house maestro and chief of International DeeJay Gigolo Records, DJ Hell, paid a vibrant visit to Cielo this past Saturday to blow up the meat-packing district with his signature sound of a kind of new-wave techno. A quintessential icon of creativity in both his music and his style, Hell has continuously offered a unique point of view to the changing trends of Electronic Music. Producing and playing tracks which reflect a revival of the 80’s musical aesthetic, Hell craftily utilizes early sounds of electro-disco by playing them in a contemporary context, forcing listeners to re-discover these sounds in a different light. DJ Hell’s Saturday night set at Cielo progressed from tech-house to a deeper, heavier techno feel, marked by Hell’s German sensibility for experimenting with an infinitely inventive approach. Hell dropped the Henrik Schwarz mix of Dixon’s “Berlin-Karlsruhe Express,” Siopis’ “Really love ya,” and MMM’s “Nous Sommes,” cleverly incorporating that old, classic rave-sound.
