Street artist Above got in contact with us about his recent trip to Cuba and the important site specific stencil he created there to raise awareness of the crisis in Haiti. His stencil, located on the coast, is of a young boy with an inner tube and a first aid kit raising the Haitian flag high above his head. A wooden sign that reads “Haiti” is next to him, pointing across the water towards the devastated country. Above has also created a video that includes both his stencil and images of the current state of Haiti. He writes, “Cuba is less than 90 miles away from Haiti making them very close neighbors. The young and courageous neighbor is embarking to Haiti to help out those who have fallen victim. The recent earthquakes in Haiti has taken over 230,000 innocent lives, wounded 300,000 and made 1,200,000 people homeless. Please GET INVOLVED and help donate to send aid and resources to the people of Haiti.”

Walrus TV just posted this great artist feature on graffiti artist Above. The interview follows his work all over the world – from Canada to Seattle to Paris. He mostly talks about his childhood and why he chose his signature arrow. It allows him to experiment with all different materials that lettering is limited to, and you can watching him making his wooden arrows that he stencils on and sprays over and over to create a whole set for each city. He says the arrow “transcends the language barrier” and can connect with viewers despite any age, gender, or race differences. It’s a great 8 minute insight into his psyche and his spirit.
