Czech photographer Vlad Artazov pokes fun at both humanity and the photographic cliché in a clever way with his work. Casting his models entirely as nails (the toolbox kind, not fingernails), he bends them to show emotion through their body language and puts them in everyday situations like a romantic date on the beach, boxing rings, strip clubs, jail, a chess match, childbirth or simply conveys emotion by putting two or three together and letting their placement express what they are “thinking.” By using strong lighting in both black and white and color images, as well as playing around with depth of field and textures, Artazov toys around with clichés in both photography and film and achieves more with nails than many photographers do with live models.
