Street artist collective Banksy had their newest street work spotted in Africa. Originally rumors had surfaced that the work was done in Cairo, but it is now rumored to be Mali. Regardless of where it is, Banksy has always been cutting edge on picking locations, creating pieces and really challenging the norm. Read the rest of the post for more inspiration.

Since when has Banksy been a collective?
Just an opinion. There is no way one guy is doing all of this.
my friend who just got back from Mali, in the peace corps says this is definitely in Mali
I give it 2 days before somebody gets to work on removing and selling them on.
Banksy isn’t one person, its an art company. Its all a scam to attract attention to people
Whatever it is, Banksy is cool!

These are definitely in Mali and spread from Bamako to Tumbuktu. I think there are about 5 or 6 in total and some have already been painted over by local taggers..
And all the work of one man I can guarantee..
Can anyone who’s been to Mali hook me up with a location of any of these pieces? I’m leaving for Bamako in 6 weeks and would love to be able to see some Banksy work in person.
How can you be sure whether or not Banksy is a collective or just a one man legend? In my eyes, he is one person and in all fairness there are a lot of rumors and myths that surround this guy. But who cares? If he/they want to remain anonymous then their privacy shouldn’t be invaded because for one, I admire Banksy’s work and secondly someone as anonymous as that is fun to keep guessing without trying my hardest to expose who he actually is. Stay up Banksy. =]
This just made my coming week complete. I was in Mali this past winter for a month. I couldn’t say with confidence though that these were done there. However, the last piece shown with the girl and the bird looks a lot like the structures in Djenne, a city made entirely out of mud and home to the largest mud mosque in the world. Also, in the first image with the woman hanging the zebra’s stripes out to dry (comedic genius that Banksy!), the brick, drain spouts, and criss-cross wall design of those roof tops and the conjestion of the buildings reminds me of Mopti and Segou. But honestly, this could be anywhere. I didn’t visit Timbuktu so I’m not sure what it’s like. I would love to know the location for sure as well, but as for Banksy I hope I never learn a true identity. I don’t see the point. I am thoroughly enjoying his mystery and art. Keep on infiltrating the public eye!

Their is only used to preserve anonmymity, something that Banksy with his quasi legal medium holds dearly. Honestly though, what does it matter if it’s a collective, am individual or a scam? His work is fresh, insightful and truly sensationalist as opposed to the flaccid offerings of Hirst & Pals. The amount of people copying his original stencil style these days in indicator of the impact his works has had.
